When I was a kid I wanted to be a witch, says Yami creator

By Sarah HoggThe BBC has received an exclusive report from the creator of one of Japan’s most beloved characters, a witch who is often depicted in traditional garb and a bow tied around her waist.
The show was originally called Witchcraft and its cast is made up of Japanese pop culture icons, including actress Akiko Okada and Japanese manga creator Shunrikyo Miyamoto.
The show, based on the Japanese folklore of a woman who wears the headdress of a witch in her house and makes use of the magical powers of her home, is part of a resurgence in popular culture of the witch.
Yami was created in the 1960s by Shunji Nishikura, a writer who has also worked on films such as Doki Doki Literature Club, and was inspired by the classic Japanese fairy tale Yami no Oshima, which describes the witch as a fierce spirit who protects her village.
“When I was growing up I had a lot of fond memories of Yami,” said the 57-year-old creator of YAMI, who did not want his full name published for fear of harassment.
“My grandmother told me that Yami was a Japanese witch who protected her village and she was always with me.”
Ms Okada said that her grandfather had been a witch himself and she wanted to make Yami a person who represented the values of traditional Japanese culture.
“I was very happy when I was able to get my hands on a drawing of Yamaiko,” Ms Okada told the BBC.
“She was very strong, so I made her a woman with a bow, and a broom, and she would help me with my crafts.”
Mr Nishikuras daughter, who has not been named, told the broadcaster that Yamaico was born in 1961 and that she had been living with her mother, who died in 2000, for two years.
“Yamaiko is one of the characters who is a very good witch,” Ms Nishikumara said.
“People love her because she has such a strong personality.
She said the character Yamaika had been given the name of Yodoko, which translates to “beautiful witch”.””
There is a witch-like character who is very powerful.”
She said the character Yamaika had been given the name of Yodoko, which translates to “beautiful witch”.
People always say that Yoda is the most famous Japanese witch, and Yami is Yoda. “
She is very beautiful and she has a strong will.”
Mr Nishiyama said Yami and Yoda had been friends for many years, but that Yodomo had become estranged from Yami.””
But Yami doesn’t have a special power, so it’s just like Yoda said, ‘I have no special power.'”
Mr Nishiyama said Yami and Yoda had been friends for many years, but that Yodomo had become estranged from Yami.
“Her father died, and her mother moved to America to work,” Mr Nishikara said, adding that Yomi was still living with his mother and other family members.
“At one point Yodomi was living with Yami, and at the same time Yami has lived with Yodoma.”
Ms Nishikoma said the two characters were often compared to each other, with Yomi being very fierce and Yodomoe more compassionate.
“It’s very hard for Yami to have a good relationship with Yoda, because Yododo doesn’t like Yami.”
“Yodoko is a beautiful witch, so she has the power to make people happy.”‘
There is no place for witches in traditional Japanese society’Ms Okaya, who lives in Los Angeles, said Yama was born out of a Japanese tradition where people had traditionally killed witches and sold their souls to the devil for a better life.
“We are talking about witchcraft, witchcraft is a religious act,” she said.
“Yami does not belong in traditional Japan.”
The Japanese government has long been concerned about a resurgence of witchcraft and witch-worship.
In a report published in 2011, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Human Rights (JSSHR) called on the government to tackle the phenomenon, which was seen as an increasingly prevalent form of abuse of the elderly and the disabled.
“There is only one reason why witches have a lot more support in Japan: there is no witch-craze,” JSSHR president Kōsuke Itō said.
The report called for the establishment of a national witch registry and to restrict witch-craft festivals.
“The government should not let witches’ activities be restricted, but should do everything it can to protect the safety and security of the public,” JBSHR chief Yasuhiro Matsumoto said.
